Avoid Tax Credit Overpayments

30 June 2010

Anyone who receives Tax Credit - Child and Working tax elements must have their renewal or declaration form sent back by 31st July 2010.

If your claim form isn' t returned your payments could stop and all the money you have received could have to be repaid.  Even if you believe that you are no longer entitled you still need to send in the forms.

It is very important to check all your tax credit award notices throughout the year and report any errors or changes in your circumstances immediately.

Tax Credits operate by calculating the following tax years tax credit payments based on the income you received in the last tax year. Therefore if you income increases in this tax year you will receive less in the next tax year.  If you report any changes you will be issued with a revised award notice.  It is the clients responsibility to check that all the changes have been made and that it is correct .  By not contacting the Tax Credit Helpline to report any errors you are deemed to have accepted that everything is correct and your payments are calculated on this basis.  Quite a few Tax Credit Overpayments are generated by individuals simply not checking their award notices in detail.
